To enter you must first read the Contest Rules & Regulations, be 19 years or older and follow the instructions below.

The Contest

Create the opening line of a novel in 128 characters or less (not including the hashtag #BLBContest if entering the contest via Twitter). Judging will be based on creativity and the ability to capture a reader’s attention.

The winner will be chosen by a celebrity author (author TBD).

The Prize

The winner will receive 2 tickets to The 2012 Book Lover’s Ball taking pace on Thursday, February 9th, 2012.

Entries can be submitted via the Toronto Public Library Foundation’s Facebook or Twitter profiles.

Enter the Contest via Facebook

  1. Visit the Toronto Public Library Foundation’s Facebook page.
  2. Click ‘Like’
  3. Click on the ‘Contest’ tab and complete the entry form

Enter the Contest via Twitter

  1. Visit the Toronto Public Library Foundation’s Twitter page.
  2. Click ‘Follow’
  3. Prepare your tweet submission. You must include the hastag #BLBContest in your tweet
  4. Press ‘tweet’

Rules & Regulations

Please read the following Rules & Regulations carefully prior to entering the Contest.

The winner will ultimately be chosen by a celebrity author (author TBD). If you are selected as the winner you will be notified by Wednesday, February 1st, 2012. Entries will only be accepted and be eligible for selection and judging if they meet the criteria as set out in these Rules & Regulations. Applicants agree to make further information available in accordance with the Administrators request and due diligence requirements. The Administrator reserves the right to verify the eligibility of all applications. By entering the Contest, applicants warrant that the information submitted by them will not infringe on intellectual property, privacy or any other rights of any third party, and will not contain anything which is libelous, defamatory, obscene, indecent, harassing or threatening.

  1. The Contest opens on Wednesday, December 14th, 2011 at 12:01 AM EST. Submissions must be posted on or before Wednesday, January 25th, 2012 at 12:01 AM EST
  2. By entering the Contest, the Applicant agrees to abide by the Contest Rules & Regulations
  3. The Applicant must be over the age of 19
  4. The Applicant must be a resident of Ontario
  5. The Applicant can only submit one (1) entry in total (either using Twitter or Facebook, not both)
  6. An entry can only be submitted via the Toronto Public Library Foundation’s official Facebook or Twitter profiles. Entries will not be accepted by email or mail
  7. The submission must not exceed (128) characters. The character count does not include the (12) characters in the hashtag #BLBContest if entering the contest via Twitter
  8. The Finalists will be short listed and chosen using the Administrator’s procedures and policies
  9. If an Applicant has not been contacted by Tuesday, February 2nd 2012, the Applicant can assume that he/she has not been chosen as the winner
  10. The Winner does not have the right to use the event name, logo or any images from the event without the express written approval of the administrator
  11. The Winner must be available on Thursday, February 9th, 2012 to attend the 2012 Book Lover’s Ball at the Fairmont Royal York
  12. The Winner will be provided with (2) tickets to the event. Tickets are not transferable
  13. The Winner must provide the name of his/her guest prior to the event
  14. The (2) tickets provided to the Winner cannot be converted to cash
  15. The Administrator reserves the right to disqualify the Applicant if it has reasonable grounds to believe the applicant has breached any of these Rules & Regulations or provided false information in its entry
  16. The Administrator reserves the right to dismiss the Winner for unprofessional conduct
  17. The Administrator reserves the right to cancel or modify the Contest or the Contest Rules & Regulations at any time without notice
  18. The Contest is in no way sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with, Facebook or Twitter
  19. The Applicant is providing information to the Toronto Public Library Foundation and not to Facebook or Twitter
  20. The Toronto Public Library Foundation discourages the creation of multiple Twitter and Facebook accounts in order to enter the Contest more than once. Anyone found to use multiple accounts to enter the Contest will be ineligible
  21. Under no circumstances will the event or its parent, subsidiaries and affiliated companies be liable for any losses, damages, cost, and expenses arising from or in any way connected with the event. The Applicant acknowledges that in entering the Contest, they have not relied on any representation, warranty, or undertaking. Nothing shall exclude the event: liability for death or personal injury as a result of its negligence or in relation to fraudulent misrepresentation
  22. The event and the Rules & Regulations will be governed by the Ontario Law and any dispute will be determined by the exclusive jurisdiction of the Ontario courts
